Trivia Answer
Did last week’s trivia question get you thinking? Before we jump into this week’s newsletter, let’s see the answer and find out if you were correct.
Signs of Spring Around the Farmington Valley

The house I grew up in didn’t have the kind of landscaping that made people slow down or ask what something was called. No one drove by and said, “We have to know what flowers those are.” No offense, mom and dad. But at some point, my parents planted a crabapple tree and for one week every year, it stole the show.
The blooms never lasted long, but they didn’t need to. That single week was proof that spring had officially arrived. It flipped a switch in your brain: although winter’s been done for a bit, now it’s time to really get out there.
Spring in the Farmington Valley brings that same sense of renewal with fresh blooms, budding trees, and gardens waking from their winter nap. While some spots may still be on the verge of peak bloom in late April, here’s a preview of the best places to catch spring’s early colors.
Elizabeth Park (West Hartford)
If spring had a headquarters, this might be it. Cherry blossoms, tulips, daffodils, it’s all happening here. Pack a picnic, bring a camera, or just wander the paths and let the flowers do their thing. Even a quick walk feels like a mood boost.
Farmington Canal Heritage Trail
While not a “formal garden”, it’s a display that “spring happening all around you.” Budding trees, early wildflowers, and birds everywhere make this trail perfect for a walk, bike ride, or stroller cruise. Nothing quite like beautiful and free.
Tulmeadow Farm (Simsbury)
Yes, the fields are turning green and the trees are waking up, but let’s be honest, this stop is also about ice cream. They opened their ice cream window April 17th, so grab a cone and soak in the pastoral views. You can finally enjoy that unmistakable “winter is finally over” feeling.
Hill-Stead Museum (Farmington)
Spring here feels a little magical. The Sunken Garden comes alive, wildflowers pop in the meadows, and the sheep return to their pasture. It’s calm, scenic, and surprisingly fun for kids who need space to roam (and sheep to spot).
Roaring Brook Nature Center (Canton)
A true early spring gem. Look for budding trees along the trails, listen for rushing water after the rains, and take in the quiet signs of the season changing. It’s peaceful, simple, and exactly what spring is supposed to feel like.
