Mini Adventures Under $20

Sometimes you want to leave the house, but the thought of spending money makes you pause. It’s like someone just threw a wet blanket over your plans, suddenly, even hanging out with friends feels too expensive. I want to be carefree, spontaneous, and fun…and sometimes, all it takes is keeping your head down long enough to spot a couple of shiny quarters that put a smile back on your face (my kids have the most luck checking parking lots and near the cash registers at Target.) You don’t have to break the bank to have a mini adventure; I’ve rounded up outings under $20, one that costs just a couple of quarters, and even a few that are totally free. So grab your friends, grab your sense of fun, and get out there!
Avon: Farmington Valley Arts Center + Ice Cream
Explore the Esther B. Drezner Visitors’ Gallery and the Fisher Gallery, where local and regional artists showcase everything from paintings and prints to jewelry, ceramics, and wearable art. If you visit First Saturdays (next one 9/12/2026), you can peek into artists’ studios along the boardwalk. Finish your mini adventure with a scoop of rotating flavors at Dom’s Creamery: sweet, local, and under $20.
Canton: Pratt Preserve Hike or Play
Pack a picnic for under $20 and enjoy it at Pratt Preserve, with picnic tables right near the water’s edge making it perfect for admiring the scenery while snacking on sandwiches, fresh fruit, or whatever you packed. Skip the picnic? No problem. Stop by Saybrook Fish House on your way home to try their local favorite, Fish House Chowder.
Farmington: Farmington River Trail + Ice Cream
Take a short bike ride or walk along the Farmington River Trail (plenty of free parking along the route), then reward yourself with a game of mini golf and a scoop of ice cream at Riverfront Miniature Golf & Ice Cream. Fun, active, and sweet, all under $20. Bonus: mini cones are just 50 cents!
Simsbury: Bagel & Picnic at Stratton Brook State Park
Start your day with a classic bagel breakfast sandwich from Brookside Bagels (under $20), then head to Stratton Brook State Park for a peaceful picnic. Morning visits mean fewer people, calmer trails, and plenty of space to enjoy the fresh air making it perfect for stretching out, reading, or letting the kids run off energy before the weekend crowds arrive. If you decide to stay all day, end the evening with a firefly hunt for a magical, glowing finish.
West Hartford: Mini Outdoor Art, Coffee Crawl, & Kids Activities
Explore Blue Back Square’s murals and public art displays, then stop at Hartford Baking Company for a treat. On Tuesday mornings, don’t miss the weekly Camp Blue Back full of kids’ activities and entertainment from 10–11:30 AM. It’s free and a local favorite. Low cost, high fun, and plenty to keep the whole family engaged.
