Simsbury’s Best-Kept Summer Secret: Stratton Brook

By the end of summer, I’m all about easy outings with my family. While most swim spots in the Farmington Valley come with a members-only vibe, Stratton Brook State Park in Simsbury is a rare exception. It’s just a beautiful place to enjoy summer without the fuss.
Originally known as Massacoe State Forest, the land was acquired in the 1940s as a demonstration area for forest fire control along railroad corridors. It was later re-designated as a state park and became a beloved local retreat. In 1996, Stratton Brook made history as Connecticut’s first fully wheelchair-accessible state park: a quiet but important milestone that reflects the park’s welcoming spirit.
Today, it offers something for everyone: a sandy swimming pond (with lifeguards in season), paved biking and walking paths, grassy picnic areas, and even restrooms and changing rooms. Just some practical luxuries for a state park. A covered bridge near the entrance adds a nice touch and makes for a perfect photo op.
You can launch a family bike ride from the parking lot straight onto the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, or grill up lunch in one of the park’s picnic areas, including a shelter available for reservation if you’re planning a gathering.
Access is free for Connecticut residents, and the vibe is laid-back and local. Whether you’re swimming, cycling, fishing, or just reading under the trees, Stratton Brook is a public gem in a region full of private summer scenes.
