Local Legends & Lore:
The Myths Behind Our Town Names

Winding Trails, Farmington
Farmington - Originally home to the Tunxis people, Farmington was incorporated in 1645, making it one of the oldest towns in Connecticut. And while the name certainly screams “agriculture,” early Farmington was more than just a sleepy farming village, it was a regional hub of trade and transportation. The Farmington River made it possible to move goods and people with surprising ease, turning the town into a key connector between Hartford and western settlements.
So where did the name come from? Likely from Farmington, England, a nod to the motherland, which was very on-trend for Puritan settlers. But let’s be honest: with its fertile soil, sprawling farmland, and location along the river, “Farmington” also just fit; it was nothing if not on the nose.
📜 Did You Know?
Farmington was dubbed “the most rebellious town in Connecticut” during the American Revolution. Later, it became a center for abolitionist activity and a known stop on the Underground Railroad. In short: never underestimate a quiet town with a cause. If you’d like to learn more you can take a tour of Farmington’s Freedom Trail (More Info).
🔍Valley Trivia

Question: How did the Avon Free Public Library get its start in the late 19th century?
Answer: Avon’s library roots go back to a traveling library with about 300 books, shared among families and rotated through homes, shops, and public buildings. It was the original version of curbside pickup, minus the curb.
By 1933, it had its first real address. The current building, on Country Club Road, opened in 1996, and today it’s a full of storytimes, study sessions, and an ever changing I Spy table.
