More Than Just Fires: How Local Fire Departments Rescue, Support and Save Our Community (and Ducklings)

When you think of your local fire department, you probably picture sirens, lights, and someone dramatically yelling “Go, go, go!” while jumping into an already moving firetruck. But in the Farmington Valley, our firefighters do a whole lot more than douse flames.

When they’re not responding to house fires or medical calls, these departments are hosting open houses (I once wandered into one with my son on Thanksgiving. 10/10, even got hats to take home), offering CPR classes, organizing toy and food drives, and, in the case of Avon, rescuing ducklings from storm drains. Yes, really; a quack-tastic save that proves no rescue is too small or too fluffy.

Firefighters play a critical role in our towns by showing up at town events (Touch-a-Truck, anyone?), supporting local schools, and making sure our neighborhoods are ready for everything. And in many cases, they’re volunteers.

Want to join the ranks? It’s a chance to learn life-saving skills, build camaraderie, and serve your community in a truly hands-on way. Bonus: you get to wear the gear. And if you're lucky? Maybe even make it into a racy calendar. Check with your local department for more info.

If you're looking for a way to support work like this and enjoy a summer night out, mark your calendar for Simsbury Rocks for Hope, happening Saturday, August 2 at Simsbury Meadows Performing Arts Center. This family-friendly concert benefits the Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp, which offers a life-changing summer experience for young burn survivors. The camp is staffed in part by firefighters and EMTs who volunteer their time. It’s a night of music, community, and gratitude for the people who always show up when we need them most in addition to the people they are helping. More details here.

So next time you see a firefighter at the grocery store or a firetruck rolling by, give a little wave. They're not just fighting fires, they’re fueling our towns with heart, grit, and yes, the occasional duckling rescue.
