Trivia Answer
Last week, we threw out a little trivia about our beloved Big Bird Bridge and asked which larger pathway it calls home. Well, the results are in, and it looks like the rest of the Valley was either struck by stage fright or busy enjoying the sunshine, because we had exactly one brave soul step up to the plate. The answer we were looking for was D — the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail. Massive congratulations to Susan Klotz, who officially beat out the entire rest of the region to claim this week’s bragging rights!
Roses, River, and Burgers: A Simple Dad Approved Day

Last year, we sent our readers off for Father’s Day at the shore, but this year, we’re keeping it local. Because let’s be honest, dads are simple creatures. They don’t need a huge cake, a skywriter, or a gift that costs more than a small car. They just want to be with the people they love, outside, with some good food and drinks.
So, how do you plan a day like that? We’ve got you covered with a classic Father’s Day itinerary that’s easy to pull off and packed with the right mix of sunshine, adventure, and indulgence.
We’ve mapped out a day that keeps everyone happy and dad feeling celebrated.
Morning: Stroll the Roses
Start your Father’s Day at Elizabeth Park in West Hartford. While roses might not be every dad’s favorite, the gardens are in full bloom by mid-June, making it the perfect backdrop for new photos with Dad. Wander the shaded paths, take in the fragrant roses, and enjoy a leisurely morning together. It’s relaxed, beautiful, and a chance to stretch your legs before the rest of the day.
Lunch: Choose Your Route
After your walk, it’s time for lunch before heading out further to Collinsville. Your route determines your spot:
Route 44 through Avon:
Stop at DaCapo, they have hearty, approachable Italian fare in a relaxed setting, perfect if you’re coming from a morning in the gardens.Route 4 through Unionville:
Stop at Puente Pub for elevated pub fare, local beers, and generous portions, casual enough not matter what you're wearing.
Both spots deliver great food and the right vibe for a Father’s Day meal, no fancy attire required!
Afternoon: Paddle the Farmington River
After lunch, drive on to Collinsville Canoe & Kayak for some active fun on the Farmington River. Rent a canoe or kayak and enjoy a peaceful float through Connecticut’s scenic outdoors.
It’s perfect for dads who love being on the water and having a bit of an adventure. Paddling fills the afternoon with fun and fresh air, just remember to pack the sunscreen.
(Note: Farmington River tubing is usually too early in June, so kayaking is the safer early-season pick.)
Father’s Day doesn’t have to be complicated to make it a day Dad won’t forget.
