Beyond the Gates: The Living History of Avon Old Farms

I often drive past Avon Old Farms, whether it’s on the way back from the grocery store, dropping my kids off at school, or simply enjoying the winding road that’s often graced by deer in the early morning. Every time, the striking stone buildings and sprawling campus make me wonder: what lies beyond those gates? Who built this place, and why does it feel like a world apart from the rest of the Farmington Valley? That curiosity led me to uncover the fascinating history of Avon Old Farms.
Theodate Pope Riddle: Trailblazer, Architect, Visionary
Theodate Pope Riddle (1867–1946) was a woman ahead of her time. Raised in Farmington and educated at Miss Porter’s School, an all-girls academy known for cultivating strong, independent women, Riddle developed a lifelong passion for learning, design, and community service. She later became one of America’s first licensed female architects. Her early architectural work included partnering with the renowned firm McKim, Mead & White on the Hill-Stead estate, her family home in Farmington.
Avon Old Farms, however, was entirely her own vision. It was a school she imagined, designed, and oversaw personally, from acquiring the land to directing the construction of each building. In 1913, Riddle acquired 3,000 acres of farmland that would become “Old Farms,” envisioning a campus where boys could grow in character, discipline, and connection to nature. While it’s tempting to wonder if Avon Old Farms was her answer to Miss Porter’s but for boys, what is clear is that Riddle wanted to shape an educational environment that combined moral guidance, academic rigor, and respect for the landscape.
Building a School and a Legacy
Construction of Avon Old Farms began in the distinctive Cotswold Tudor style, using materials sourced directly from the property. The slate roofs, stone walls, and detailed woodwork reflect Riddle’s belief that the architecture should inspire and shape daily life.
During World War II, the school temporarily closed, but Riddle’s patriotism led to its transformation into a Convalescent Hospital for Blinded Veterans, gaining national recognition for its architecture and service. After reopening in 1948, Avon faced financial challenges, but under Headmasters Don Pierpont and George Trautman, the school was revitalized, modernized, and strengthened, which ensured that Riddle’s vision endured for generations.
A Campus That Connects to the Valley Today
While Avon Old Farms is very much a thriving school, the campus remains a highlight of the broader community. Locals can explore the historic buildings during open houses through guided tours, or enjoy student art exhibitions featuring both Avon students and regional youth.
The campus also hosts summer camps, giving children the chance to explore trails, play sports, and experience the grounds firsthand. The Jennings Fairchild Ice Rink brings kids from across the Valley to skate and learn hockey, offering another way the school’s spaces enrich the community.
Step Beyond the Gates
Next time you drive past Avon Old Farms, take a moment to imagine the story behind the stone walls. Picture Theodate Pope Riddle walking these hills, shaping a campus that combined beauty, education, and purpose. Consider the students and veterans who have called this place home, and the children who now wander the trails or lace up skates in her vision filled legacy. History lives here, not as a relic, but as a vibrant part of the Farmington Valley, waiting for locals to experience, appreciate, and carry it forward.
