March Into Spring: Our Favorite Early Season Hikes
The first time I hiked, it was for my cousin’s birthday. Spring had just started, and I couldn’t understand why anyone would choose muddy trails before cake. I was more of a singing and dancing kid than a running and hiking one, and keeping up felt like actual work, but the promise of dessert kept me going.
Now, hiking feels less like a workout and more like a way to enjoy the outdoors in a new season. By late March, crocuses are popping up, buds are forming, and early migratory birds are back. With fewer people on the trails and mostly bare trees, sightlines are long, wildlife is easier to spot, and overlooks feel extra expansive. Trails can still be muddy or icy, so boots and a little caution are wise, but this is prime time to get outside.
From quiet woodlands to sparkling reservoirs, here are the trails worth dusting off your boots for:
Canton Land Trust – Uplands Preserve Trails (1.5 miles)
Gentle climbs, winding woodlands, and vernal pools whispering “spring is coming”, that’s Uplands in a nutshell. Start at Westwood Drive for the blue trail or Uplands South for the yellow, and grab the white trail if you want a little extra adventure. Dogs are welcome, just keep them close.
Simsbury Land Trust – Wagner Woods (1.7 miles)
This forest is basically a hidden stage for spring wildlife. Stone walls hint at the property’s farming past, bluebirds flit along hayfield edges, and red-shouldered hawks love to show off overhead. The trails are flat and easy, making it perfect for a reflective stroll; or combine with Great Pond State Forest if you’re feeling ambitious.
Farmington Land Trust – Nancy Conklin Trail (0.6 miles)
Short, sweet, and riverside, this trail hugs the Pequabuck before meeting the Farmington. Early spring means rushing water, thawing earth, and birds declaring their return. Community gardens peek out along the route, giving you a little “look what’s coming” moment before summer blooms. Easy for all skill levels, but big on that fresh air payoff.
Avon Land Trust – Oaks Preserve (0.4 miles)
Nearly half a mile, and yett a full on adventure. Ancient history, a buttonbush swamp, and wildlife galore make this little loop surprisingly lively. Kingfishers, herons, deer, and even river otters might pop in to say hello. Flat, short, and totally worth it if you want a quick nature hit with a side of local lore.
West Hartford – MDC Reservoir 6 (3.6 miles)
Wide trails, sparkling water, and early spring flowers popping up, Reservoir 6 is basically the backstage pass to the forest without leaving town. Bare trees give you killer sightlines for waterfowl and wildlife, and with 30+ miles of trails, you can make it a quick stroll or a whole-day adventure. Stick to the trails and follow the rules, you’ll be rewarded with serious peace and quiet.
