Art in the Open: Farmington Live Art Walk
On May 9, the Farmington Live Art Walk will turn Farmington Cultural District into a one-mile, open-air gallery where creativity happens in real time. More than 40 local artists will line Main Street demonstrating everything from painting and illustration to carving, quilting, and mixed-media art. As you stroll the route, you’ll see artists creating live while chatting with visitors, and even a few neighborhood porches and yards transformed into pop-up galleries. It’s a free, family-friendly way to experience Farmington’s growing arts scene and see creativity come to life right in front of you. Even better if you need some plans for mother’s day weekend.
Blooms, Brunch, and Ice Cream: Celebrate Mom Locally

May is here. Hello blooming lilacs, longer days, and a perfectly good reason to shower Mom with love. For me, Mother’s Day has always had a sweet side. Growing up, my mom loved spending it at our local ice cream stand. Hot fudge, whipped cream, and a sundae so big it basically was dinner. I’m sure I gave her a home made card and something half heartedly thrown together at school, but the sundae? That was the real gift. The way she lit up when she dug into that mountain of ice cream is a memory I’ll never forget.
These days, as a mom myself, my idea of the perfect Mother’s Day looks a little different. With little kids running around, I cherish the rare moments of quiet and alone time. Some might call it “selfish,” but I call it a gift that always fits perfectly. Everyone celebrates differently, though, and that’s the beauty of it. Some moms want indulgence, some want nature, some want handmade chaos (looking at you, glitter glue fans). Whatever your style, the Farmington Valley has you covered.
Whatever your style, there are plenty of ways to make Mother’s Day special right here in the Farmington Valley.
Brunch with a View
Treat Mom to riverside vibes at Millwrights in Simsbury, or grab a table at Avert Brassiere for something a little chic and cozy. Think hearty bites and maybe even a mimosa or two. Because brunch tastes even better when someone else brings the food and does the dishes.
Gifts from the Heart
Find local treasures at SubherbanLivin in Simsbury, where women run small businesses offer jewelry, art, candles, and more. All items are handmade and ready to gift. Or stop by The Home Place in Canton for timeless décor, accessories, and little lifestyle treasures that feel extra special. Perfect for moms who love thoughtful, local finds.
Fresh Blooms
Skip the grocery store bouquet and pick up a hand tied arrangement from Petal Pushers in Avon or CV Custom Creations in Simsbury. Local florals always feel extra special, and nothing says “I love you” quite like blooms hand picked by someone who knows their petals.
Pampering & Relaxation
Give Mom a little “me time.” Treat her to a luxurious experience at SEOUL Spa and Sauna in West Hartford, or at The Head Spa, where treatments restore and detoxify the scalp. Think massages, facials, and a moment to just breathe, this is indulgence that truly refreshes from head to toe.
Nature & Nostalgia
Skip the crowded trails and opt for something a little calmer. Take a peaceful stroll through McLean Game Refuge, where wide paths and quiet woods make it easy to slow down and enjoy the moment. Or plan a riverside walk in Collinsville paired with a stop at Riverside Nursery. A perfect time of year to pick up flowers or herbs and let Mom choose something she actually wants. Fresh air, no rush, and maybe a plant or two to take home. Now that’s a Mother’s Day win.
Sweet Endings
No Mother’s Day is complete without a little ice cream indulgence; just ask my mom. Stop by Dom’s Creamery in Avon for classic flavors, or head to Tulmeadow Farm in Simsbury for farm fresh scoops and seasonal treats. Whether you’re reliving childhood traditions or starting new ones, ending the day with local ice cream is always a sweet idea.
