The Revolutionary (and Possibly Restless) History of Abigail’s Grille

Abigail’s Grille & Wine Bar has been standing on Hopmeadow Street since 1780. It was built during the American Revolution, when what is now Route 44 was the Boston-to-Albany Turnpike, one of the most important inland roads in the colonies. Long before SUVs climbed Talcott Mountain, stagecoaches did. And when travelers crested the ridge and saw chimney smoke rising from Pettibone Tavern, they knew they’d reached the first major stop outside Hartford.A place where travelers could find hot food, strong drink, and even stronger opinions about the war.

This wasn’t just a roadside inn. It was a meeting ground.

Local accounts tie the tavern to conversations between Captain Phelps of Simsbury and Ethan Allen’s Green Mountain Boys ahead of their 1775 capture of Fort Ticonderoga, which was one of the earliest American victories of the Revolutionary War. It’s also widely believed that George Washington and John Adams passed through during their travels between Boston and New York.

So yes, you’re dining in a place where the Founding Fathers may have mapped strategy, traded intelligence, and gathered strength before heading back out into a nation being born.

After the Revolution, the tavern remained central to community life until 1800, when it was reportedly burned to the ground during frontier conflict. It was rebuilt in 1803. Today, charred hand hewn beams from the original structure can still be seen in the basement; a quiet reminder that this building has quite literally risen from ashes.

There’s also a bricked up tunnel in that basement said to connect to the colonial home across the street. As abolitionist sentiment grew in the 19th century, local lore holds that the tavern may have played a role in the Underground Railroad, offering discreet passage to freedom. While documented proof is limited, whispers remain.

And then there’s Abigail, who the restaurant is named after.

The tavern’s most famous legend centers on Abigail Pettibone, the wife of a local sea captain. According to the story, she found companionship elsewhere during his long voyages. He returned unexpectedly. An axe was involved, and as you may have guessed, it did not end well.

A portrait hanging in the tavern, long rumored to depict young Abigail, appears to have had a figure cut from the canvas, fueling speculation for decades. Over the years, staff and patrons have reported paranormal experiences:

• Sudden cold drafts near the second-floor ladies’ room
• Candles and fireplaces relighting themselves
• Wine bottles launching themselves from racks
• Furniture shifting
• Voices calling employees by name

Multiple paranormal groups have investigated, including T.A.P.S. from Ghost Hunters, who found no definitive evidence of a haunting; though they did record high electromagnetic fields in parts of the building, which can sometimes produce unusual sensations.

So what’s really happening at Abigail’s?

Revolutionary echoes? Underground secrets? An 18th-century wife with unfinished business?

Or just a 246-year-old building with dramatic lighting and a very good wine list?

Either way, if you’re looking for a little history with your hauntings this October, you won’t find a better table in the Valley.
