A Quick Check In
The Valley Verve has always been about one thing: doing the homework so you can skip straight to the good stuff.
As we roll into fall, I want to make sure every issue stays punchy, practical, and worth your inbox space. I put together a quick 60 second survey to see what you actually love, what you skip, and how to make this work best for your week.
Thanks for helping me keep this useful, local, and focused on what matters.
Halloween: From Cozy Creepy to Full-On Fright
October has arrived, which means the Valley has officially entered its spookiest (and coziest) season. The air turns crisp, pumpkins multiply on front porches, and suddenly every weekend comes with at least one haunted option.
Full disclosure: I don’t do terrifying. I like my Halloween with glowing jack-o’-lanterns, lantern-lit paths, and just enough creepiness to feel festive—not traumatized.
So consider this your guide to Halloween happenings around the Valley and nearby. Whether you’re looking for family-friendly fall vibes, choose-your-own-level scares, or something that will genuinely make you scream, there’s something here for you.
Spooky but Manageable: Festive, atmospheric, and fun—no screaming required.
Pumpkin Palooza – Hungerford Nature Center

Light into the Dungeon – Old New-Gate Prison
📅 Weekends in Oct | 📍 East Granby | 🔗 More Info
Descend into the dim tunnels of a historic copper mine turned state prison, illuminated by glowing pumpkins throughout. It’s eerie, beautiful, and steeped in history—more haunting than horrifying. Timed-entry tickets are typically required and often sell out.

📅 Oct 22, 23, 24 & 29, 30 | 📍 West Hartford | 🔗 More Info

Choose Your Scare: Same event, different vibes depending on when you go.
Haunted Walk Through – Flamig Farm
📅 Oct 16,17 23 & 24 | 🕰️ Family-friendly early / scarier later | 📍 Simsbury | 🔗 More Info
A Halloween stroll through festive décor, pumpkins, and playful scares on the farm’s petting zoo side (animal sightings possible). Earlier time slots are geared toward kids and families, while later slots dial up the spook factor for older visitors.
Haunted Trails – Winding Trails
📅 Oct 24 | 📍 Farmington | 🔗 More Info
Hop on a haunted hayride through the woods featuring spooky scenes and costumed characters. Before or after your ride, enjoy pumpkin carving, crafts, campfires, and refreshments. Daylight sessions are gentler; after-dark rides bring the chills. Parental discretion advised.
For the Brave Only: High-intensity scares ahead. Proceed accordingly.
Evidence of Evil – Lyman Orchards
📅 Fri - Sun in Oct | 📍 Middlefield | 🔗 More Info
A full-scale haunted trail designed to push your limits with dark scenes, loud effects, and relentless jump scares. Not recommended for kids or anyone who prefers their heart rate steady.
Trail of Terror
📅 Fri - Sun in Oct | 📍 Wallingford | 🔗 More Info
Often considered one of Connecticut’s scariest haunted attractions, this immersive outdoor trail goes all-in on fog, elaborate sets, and actors who do not hold back. If you’re chasing adrenaline and bragging rights, this one delivers.
Pro tip: When in doubt, choose the earlier time slot. Your nervous system will thank you.
