I took my own advice this week and made a stop at Rogers Orchards. I came home with apples, donuts, and some seriously good views.

This week we’re switching gears with a little Canton history. I’m curious, share in the comments what surprised you most, what event’s on your list to check out, and what local stories should I dig into next? You can also email me [email protected].

This newsletter’s for all of us, so your ideas keep it fresh (and fun).

Local Legends & Lore: The Myths Behind Our Town Names

Canton

When Canton officially separated from Simsbury in 1806, the task of naming the new town fell to Ephraim Mills, a local leader involved in its incorporation. The name "Canton" was chosen due to its association with the Swiss cantons, semi-sovereign states known for their independence and unity. The term "canton" means "to divide or set off," making it an apt choice for a town newly partitioned from Simsbury.

Another perspective, offered by Sylvester Barbour in his book Reminiscences, suggests that Mills was inspired by the Swiss people's patriotism and the appealing sound and simplicity of the word "Canton."

📜 Did You Know?

Canton is home to Collinsville, a historic mill village that was once the headquarters of the Collins Company. It was one of the world’s largest axe manufacturers in the 1800s. Their tools were so trusted, they were used during the construction of the Panama Canal and even by Arctic explorers.

Last Month's Trivia Answer

Question: What once-secret U.S. military defense system was built deep inside a mountain on the border of Simsbury?

Answer: A Cold War-era Nike missile site was built inside Talcott Mountain, near the Simsbury-Avon border. Part of a secret U.S. defense system, it housed surface-to-air missiles meant to intercept Soviet bombers. Though decommissioned in the 1970s, remnants still exist in the woods today.
